National Internship in Official Statistics

Facilitating the students to get familiarized with the prevailing system of Official Statistics in India.

About the NIOS Scheme

Objective

  • To facilitate the young academic talent to study and get familiarized with the prevailing system of Official Statistics in the Country.
  • To provide hands-on exposure to the diverse verticals & offices of MoSPI encompassing key domains such as National Accounts Statistics, Index Numbers, Energy Statistics, National Economic Classifications, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Environment Statistics & Accounting, Global Indices and Survey Subjects like PLFS, ASUSE, ASI, SE, UFS, Price Collection etc
  • To familiarize the interested and willing students with the Official Statistical System of the Country, with specific reference to data collection, processing & analysis, publication and dissemination needs.

Place of Internship

Internships would be in two groups namely “Group A” and “Group B”. Under Group “A” applications are invited for internships in offices located in New Delhi, including NSO (FOD) Regional Office, Delhi. Whereas, under “Group B” applications are invited for internships in offices of MoSPI located in rest of the country. Availability of internship slots is tentative and may increase/decrease or relocate with the approval of competent authority.

Eligibility

Bonafide students of any recognized University / Institution within India or abroad, fulfilling following conditions shall be eligible to apply for the internship:

  • Under-graduate students, having completed / appeared in the term end exams of second year / 4th semester of the bachelor’s degree course with at least one paper in Statistics or Mathematics in their curriculum AND secured not less than 75% or equivalent marks in 12th Class.
  • Graduate students pursuing any year of their Post-Graduate Programme with at least one paper inStatistics or Mathematics in their curriculum OR students pursuing Research / Ph.D. in Statistics / Mathematical Statistics / Operations Research / Economics / Demography or any other field of Applied Statistics AND secured not less than 70% or equivalent marks in Graduation.
  • Applicants who have successfully completed their graduation / post-graduate within the last two years and securing not less than 70% or equivalent marks in Graduation and / or Post-Graduation.

Note:

  • Applicants who are currently pursuing Graduation / Post- Graduation can only apply for the internship slots of duration 2 months to 3 months only.
  • Applicants who have passed out Graduation / passed out Post- Graduation / currently pursuing Research/Ph.D can apply for the internship slots of duration 2 months to 6 months.

Procedure for Application

  • Applicants may apply for an internship opportunity in either Group ‘A’ or Group ‘B’, but not both. Submitting applications for both groups will lead to disqualification and blacklisting. Each applicant is required to submit a single application in strict accordance with the instructions provided in Annex-III.
  • The selection of interns would be done by Training Unit, Capacity Development Division, MoSPI for Group “A” and by respective Regional Heads of ROs of NSO (FOD) for ROs, ZOs, DESs and other internship centres located in that particular city. EnSD will be selection point in respect of all internship centres at Kolkata.
  • In case of State Capitals where more than one office are associated with internship, the representative of all the offices involved will be part of the Selection Committee headed by Head of the NSO (FOD) Regional Office/ DDG (DPD/EnSD), Kolkata as the case may be. It is the responsibility of the head of the NSO (FOD) Regional office/ DDG (DPD/EnSD), Kolkata as the case may be, to invite concerned officers from other offices where interns have to be attached. The list of selected candidates will be prepared at every selection point separately.
  • Selection of the candidates will be done through the online portal on the basis of the aggregate marks obtained in 12th or equivalent/graduation/post - graduation (excluding qualifying subject(s)), as applicable, and allocation of internship office will be done taking into account the above selection criterion and the place option exercised by the candidates. Candidates should also mention the qualifying subjects of graduation while mentioning the aggregate marks obtained in the graduation. In case of CGPA, candidates should also mention the conversion formula from CGPA to percentage marks
  • The selected candidates/applicants would be informed through the Online Portal for National Internship in Official Statistics (NIOS), MoSPI at https://internship.mospi.gov.in. Also, selected candidates/applicants would be informed through an e-mail besides displaying the list of selected interns on the website of the MoSPI in the case of Group “A” and notice board of the respective offices in the case of Group “B”. All the candidates are required to furnish their e-mail id clearly and mandatorily in the application form and keep checking the status of their application form on Online Portal from time to time.
  • The internship will be for a period ranging for 2 months to 6 months from the date of joining. Selection points/Internship Centres may decide about joining date depending on local circumstances. If any intern leaves or discontinues the internship in between, that is, before completion of the said, he/she will not be entitled for any stipend/certificate.
  • Stipend to interns would be transferred directly into their bank account only through electronic mode of funds transfer/ Aadhaar Payments Bridge (APB)/ Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) by selection points and no cash payments would be made.
  • No enquiries will be entertained by offices other than designated offices and officers for receipt of applications/selection of candidates etc.
